Team 3 Workshop Discussion

  1. What activities to secure lasting energy capabilities should be performed over the next 25-100 years while the Earth’s fossil fuels bridge is still intact?

  2. Give specifics on alternate energy production methods, research areas, conservation, policies, ….

What are the large scale energy alternatives available?

  1. Nuclear Fission - likely leads to a plutonium economy

  2. Space Based Solar Power - Very interesting, do the economics work?

  3. "Clean" Coal - Very difficult problem <==> Oximoron?

  4. "Renewables" Solar + Wind + Others - Regionally adaptive systems, just do it!

  5. Methane Hydrate - Lots of low grade potential, processing required to realize?

  6. Fusion - Use the nearest net power fusion reactor until get the science figured out

What can Space bring to the table?

  1. Space Contribution

  2. direct generation of power for different segments of the market

  3. waste disposal

  4. economic driver

  5. ripple through of technology

  6. Space relay - energy on demand

  7. improve efficencies

  8. energy security

Developing Figures of Merit

  1. Scalability

  2. Space Contribution

  3. Intermittancy

  4. Baseload power $/kilowatt-hour

    • The right figure of merit is a LaPlace Transform of Discernment

    • Collision with "real" cost to end users

    • N% Supply Side Incentive

  5. Safety

  6. Environmental Considerations

  7. Systems of Systems

    • overall system must have net Value

      • Value = Summation of Rewards - Summation of Risks
