Strategic Directions, Plans & Policy - NSS Open Policies

The DNA of NSS - the building blocks of our future

  1. Frame Discussions

  2. Orchestrate Cooperation

  3. Educate

  4. Foster Research & Development

  5. Building "Community"

  6. Adapt/build/field the Hardware/Software/Systems tools that accelerate achivement of our goal

Strategic Plan Engagement

  1. The ongoing strategic planning process will be documented in an NSS Strategic Plan and maintained on an ongoing basis on the strategic planning wiki. This will include plan development and the engagement of NSS resources (BoG, BoA, BoD, Excom, Opscom, committee, etc.).

  2. Based on the discussions at the BoD meeting, the CEC will undertake to develop and provide for the BoD, a living Strategic Plan with ongoing overlays covering One-to-five Years out, specific actions taken, and results to date. The NSS Strategic Plan will be presented at the next board meeting, with formal updates available at subsequent regular and special meetings.

Privacy Policy

  1. Our policy is proscribed by the FTC guidelines consistent with the advice of our General Counsel. This will be turned into a distributable document that is fully correlated with our office business processes.

IT Infrastructure

  1. Actions have moved forward to rationalize the organization's information technology.

    • This has resulted in the directed support to ISDC and the infrastructure charges in the committee report.

NSS & CSS Agreement

  1. Pursuant to the Excom action the affliation agreement between the Canadian Space Society and NSS has been signed.

Things NSS Can Do!

"It not enough to talk about it, we have to do something!" "Architecting the future is akin to building cathederals, technological or otherwise. It is not and can not be just about what an individual can do." "This is the outline that we need to be filling out"

  1. Frame Discussions ...

    • lowering launch costs

    • ITAR

    • space energy solutions ==> resource solution

    • space raw materials solutions ==> resource solution

    • space useable area solutions ==> resource solution

  2. Orchestrate Cooperation

    • Internal

    • Cross-Organization

    • Broader Community

    • International Coordination

      • Improve NSS international policy

        • What are other countries doing?

          • Other national space policies

          • Desired End States

          • International Space Policy Forum

            • Bring the Internationals to ISDC's in the states

            • Partner to bring the ISDC to the international community.

        • Consider an electronic membership for International Members.

      • Change the name or instead of changing the name you extend to the federation of national space societies?

      • Multi-language

    • Upcoming Milestone Linkages

    • Space Calender linkages between organizations

    • Political Action

  3. Educate

    • Ad Astra

    • Web Site

      • Chapter Level

      • National Level

      • International Level

    • Tools

      • Printed Matter

      • Electronic Matter

      • Mind Share

      • Placement

      • Cross Links

  6. Build Hardware/Software/Systems

    • Things to use there . . .

      • Demonstrate plug-in/plug-out technology

    • Things to help us get there . . .

      • Internet Collaboration Tools

      • Conference Management Tools

Thoughts from the Group

  1. Where is the link to tangible benefits for the tapping into our future membership?

  2. Importance of Value propistions

  3. Need to move forward with getting our message out and reaching the right communities

  4. We need advocacy for settlement as a driver for our organization

  5. We should make clear that space science and education are part of our program.

  6. What matter is the "Things that NSS will Do!"

  7. Where does space fit into peoples lives. What is important and what will it mean to them.

  8. We need to focus on short and long term goals

  9. More science in NSS

  10. Motions must be understood in terms relevant to Society

  11. Our objectives and goals transcend any national barriers

  12. Link to youth, what are the trancendent images and concepts

  13. Vision is the full use of space for the betterment of humankind

  14. We have to about what we are actually going to do

  15. We need to focus on the implementation

  16. Apollo changed philosophy more than anything

  17. All the technologies and all the sciences that lead us to our long range goal are estential, we need to be about the business of moving forward.

  18. Get on with the business, ala the blitz etc.

  19. It is not so much the words, it is the follow through actions

Motion Discussion

  1. Vision motion - How long do we expect this to last? . . . the Board can change it anytime it wants to for whatever reason.

  2. Wordsmithing is secondary to the work that needs to be done, but in the fullness of time it to must be done

  3. The material must meet two tests:

    • Do they guide our near term actions?

    • Do they tell the rest of world what we are about?

  4. We need to balance the strategic and tactical levels

  5. We need to correlate our actions to our roadmap

  6. 14 to 2 first motion passes (Wordsmithing is required to reach for unanimous consent) ? abstentions

  7. 13 to 2 second motion passes (Wordsmithing is required to reach for unanimous consent) 2 abstentions

  8. 14 to 1 third motion passes (Wordsmithing is required to reach for unanimous consent) 1 abstentions 1 absent

  9. 15 to 0 fifth motion passes (Wordsmithing is required to reach for unanimous consent) 2 abstentions 0 absent

  10. Discussion on motion four . . .

    • strike "in priority order"

    • change order

    • Parlimentarian ruling is that the question can not be seperated

    • The inclusion of the quote issue is not on table

    • Setttlement as a verb to make clear that we are raising the big tent that is inclusive of all the precursors.

    • We must fix on the context that "settlement" implies in this motion

  11. 6 to 10 fifth motion does not pass (Wordsmithing is required to reach for unanimous consent) 1 abstentions 0 absent

    • We do not have agreement on context here, we will amend the agenda to extend the Board meeting to allow for the discussion of context.

  12. 14 to 2 to 1 fourth motion tabled for further work based on agreement in principle to establish the context of the big tent to be put someplace perhaps as a second sentence, perhaps elsewhere. Work will continue with the goal of presenting to board where things stand in the morning. Regardless the Marketing & Strategy Committee will carry the action forward. Gary text basis for context with updated verbs and adjectives, as well as missing clauses added. Flow into the "Margaret" single sentence rationalizing the overlay and passing the one breath marketing test.
