Remove "Home" from the Home Page - it doesn't do anything useful up front.

Move "Join", "Renew", and "Donate" off the navbar and back to the top of the left column into buttons identical to "site search" in the "pillow" style seen so many other places. Our current "flat" style isn't exciting.

On the home page issue - I think it really has to be unique; there are 4 different types of content there that affect layout:

(1) Essentially static content, like the top graphic and lists of links in the navigation areas (about us, join/renew/donate, search, etc.)
(2) Official NSS content that changes frequently - the press releases and other changing items we want to link to.
(3) Official NSS content that we want to highlight for a period of time - upcoming meetings and conferences - perhaps changing once a month or so (Moon-Mars Blitz graphic right now, for example).
(4) Interesting, interactive stuff that may be changing daily - the "blog" links, space news items, etc (right hand column in index_test.html)

Probably only a limited version of (1) and perhaps (3) should appear on other site pages.

The "Special Nav" section should contain our high value links, like the upcoming conferences and join/renew/donate icons.

Main navigation bar topics:

NSS (includes link back to home page)

-- history, governance, committees, chapter system (rules etc.), contacts

ACTION

-- Membership in NSS, chapters, forums, conferences, letters from members, petitions, alert lists, MyNSS etc.

INFORMATION

-- Education, Ad Astra, press releases and other news, space medicine site, NOR, Links, Books, (Store)

POLICY

-- links to statements, info about govt. programs, missions, legislative activities in US and other countries, Aldridge Commission report, testimony

ECONOMY

-- NSS fund raising, activities in support of commercial efforts, x prize, tourism, satellite activities, etc.

FUTURE

-- road map, new technologies and applications: space elevator, space solar power, moon and mars bases, orbital colonies, etc.

It doesn't hurt for the same section to be under more than one of these headings, but the ideal classification minimizes the need for that, while keeping to just 5 or 6 top level categories.
